Stories: Tech Early Days
1983-1990
These stories are dedicated to the team. They know who they are.
And to those who made it possible, especially Paul Ylvisaker and the leadership shown by the legislators who helped pass the Meadowlands Reclamation and Development Act, one of the first pieces of legislation dedicated to preserving the 'delicate balance of nature.'

Stories: The Meadowlands
1975-1983
Abridged Professional Me
Baby boomer. Grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. Went to Summit High School and NJIT. Graduated 1978 with BS in Chemical Engineering and Distinction in Humanistic Studies. Got a head start on a professional education during college as an intern doing water sampling and other environmental work with the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission (HMDC).
Graduating, I painted houses and trekked home and abroad for a year. Then joined the HMDC and stayed for six years. Learned to do the impossible, helping manage a project to begin to convert 2,000 acres of garbage dumps and wetlands amidst an urban surround into a park that graces the landscape today.
In 1983, bought an IBM PC from Computerland on Route 22 with my dad. Father and son became partners. Helped lead several computer user groups in NJ and NYC. Taught computers to adults and wrote and published training guides. Formed a company, the Burgiss Group. Learned database development. Hired employees. Built bespoke database systems. With others, designed, built and marketed professional database development tools. In 1990, co-authored a successful book on programming (Paradox Programmer’s Guide: PAL By Example).
In 1993, with backing from Tom Judge of AT&T Investment Management, expanded an early consulting assignment and refocused company exclusively on a developing a system for private capital investors called private i. In 1999, added data operations to the mix, thus launching Burgiss into financial services. In 2009, co-authored another book (Inside Private Equity). Over time, recruited and assembled a stellar team. Together we learned to effectively apply our energy and talents and aggressively kept up client needs and rapid technological advances. Our team coalesced and learned to build and manage a large, global enterprise.
A significant minority stake in Burgiss was acquired by MSCI in 2020. Merged with another financial systems provider, Caissa, in 2022. Grew the combined company to 700 employees and nearly $100 million in annual revenue.
In 2021, created investing entity, Hudson Street Ventures. Now with one portfolio company, Bipsync, a research management platform. Sold remaining stake in Burgiss to MSCI in 2023.
Still interested in doing the seemingly impossible.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sounds like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest.
